2centavos is the pseudonym of Southside Chicago-born club DJ, Alejandro Ruizesparza. Proudly Xicanx and non-binary, 2centavos began their project through using music-mixing to inwardly explore their identity and live-performing to outwardly promote social visibility. Growing up adoring a collage of seemingly disparate sounds (from reggaeton, to cumbia, to industrial metal, to footwork, to ballroom club, to top-40s pop and beyond) has influenced 2centavos’ sets.
Their live explorations frequently result in dance environments characterized by heavy drums, syncopated beats, unexpected pop edits, industrial screeching, and constant track blending.
Thematically, 2centavos attempts to explore their own identity in the context of their sets. In the past, they have used music to explore their Latinidad, bodily discomforts related to gender, and sexual positivity, among other topics. While their sets are frequently characterized as “dark” and “spooky”, you can frequently hear moments of levity, pride, sexiness, and humour hinting at a persistently hopeful underlying message.
The artist’s pronouns are they/them and they appreciate efforts shown to respect that :)
